There's a Portuguese proverb that says God writes straight with crooked lines. I have found that to be very true. From the earliest point in my career when I started singing with my brother Carl's band, The Expressions, in Augusta, Georgia. Since then, I have been on an amazing journey and sometimes the lines didn't seem to go in any understandable direction!
Augusta, Georgia was the home of my musical roots. Working with the Expressions taught me a lot about performing, confidence, commitment to my goals. One of my earliest influences was the late great James Brown. He was from Augusta and we had the great pleasure of seeing him perform in person many times. Those funky, rockin' melodies of Southern R&B and Rock and Roll created a deep love of music for me at an early age. Combine that with the sounds of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lyn, Dolly Parton, Brenda Lee (who lived across the street from me at one time in North Augusta) and you can see my love of music was well rounded and deeply imbedded at an early age.......and who can forget The Beatles and Little Stevie Wonder! All the Great sounds of Motown . Those musical influences live on today.
I always wanted to do something to help others with my music and get great satisfaction from the work we do helping young people. All of us have something to give. Your purpose is rooted in your passion and I have always been passionate about music and helping others. It all began with my brother Carl and those great guys who made up The Expressions!
Now singing with my daughter Kelly, I look back and see that I've traveled many different roads to get to this point in my life. One of my greatest blessings is to see Kelly as a Mom now with her own daughter, Alie, who joins us in our work helping kids. Life is a circle. Music is the teacher and healer that has guided us.

We dedicate the work of The Special Angel Project to the memory of my brother Carl Lawrence. We're pleased to present a glimpse into the past honoring the memory of good times with "The Expressions." Featured below are two of the songs I wrote during that time. Frank Deroller on keyboards, Gary McGloan on drums, Tommy Downs on vocals. John Wilson lead guitar and Bob Kline on bass guitar, Carl Lawrence, manager and background vocals, Suzanne "Suzee" Lawrence vocals and tambourine. ( I still have that same tambourine! )
